Back to the Future II (1989) - MAP: 78.93/100
IMDb / Wikipedia / My Collection
Watching these in reverse order has been a trip but I doubt I’ll repeat the adventure this way - they say to never say never but… (never - ha!). Back to the Future III (1990) - MAP: 86.01 was released a mere six months after this one so I recall thinking it was cool I didn’t have to wait - their scores are close but I think the 3rd installment was easier to watch, the story held a little tighter together.
Keep in mind the first film ends with Doc Brown appearing suddenly in 1985 and rushing Marty McFly and girlfriend Jennifer off to the future. The second film begins where the other left off and it’s not long until we’re 30 years into the future - think of it, 2015 - what will life be like?!? Flying cars of course, Nikes that lace themselves tight, electronic jackets that adjust themselves to the wearer, and snazzy hoverboards - if the movie’s right, the future so bright we’ll all be wearing shades (that look like solid metal).
Clearly, Zemeckis and crew were have a great deal of fun dreaming up what living in 2015 would be like but this is my least favorite part of the film… the acting is a bit overblown, the sequence feels rushed, and much of the story of how we’ve arrived at in the current state of affairs in simply handed to us in crude dialog… “oh don’t you remember when Marty got in that car accident…” Never my favorite form of plot delivery.
Those complaints aside, it is still a fun film and I doubt any other film of its time tried to pack as much into one sitting. We resolve the original issue in 2015 but create another which becomes apparent by the dystopian 1985 timeline they return to. We realize Biff has smuggled a sports almanac to his younger 1955 self which he used to turn the timeline in his own favor. There is little choice but to head back to 1955 to resolve that issue, before heading back to the restored 1985… before we can, a stray lightening bolt (and a faulty time machine) land Doc Brown in 1885 and strands Marty in 1955. It’s truly a lot to take in.
I had a few people remark this was their favorite of the series and its so action packed, there’s little wonder why. This is a movie on overdrive. The future was a fun speculation, the dystopian 1985 a mix of failed Trump-ian casinos and road warrior violence, the 1955 sequence saw us crisscrossing events in the original film, and the ending - well, I didn’t see it coming, that’s for sure. This movie overwhelmed the senses but it’s not my personal favorite.
It’s shot through with weak dialog, plot holes, and things that popped me out of the movie bubble. If I was driving down the road I’d sure notice someone sitting up talking on a walkie-talkie in the backseat. There are a few lazy directorial choices that stood out but you can (mostly) forgive them - there is so much going on, things whipped along so quickly, the “Bobs” (Bob Gale and Bob Zemeckis) surely were holding on by the seat of their pants. I’m also betting younger viewers in 1989, were less bothered by the defects in manufacture.
Ok - while I doubt I’ll watch the movies out of context again, I have to admit it has worked as I intended. Sequestered from the series, I have sharpened the MAP’ping view. It’s an old proofreading technique I brought out from my resume and newspaper article writing bag of tricks - when you proofread things as you’ve written it, you will literally see what you meant to write (a little visual mirage your brain plays on you). If you read the document/article backwards and from the bottom-to-top you’ll see each word separately and for what’s actually typed on the page. It brings the errors in sharp, glaring focus. Little tip from me to you - movie on!

2021.11.30 16:04 faloofay My girl keeps rapidly pacing?...

Her enclosure isn't too small, I've made it as big as I can and it practically takes up the entire underside of my platformed bed (it's exposed to light and she usually spends the day sleeping in a blanket outside the area like a tiny dog)

I've read that it could be too much open space so make sure to keep it fairly cluttered with blankets and tubes. She doesn't have a bucket wheel yet, so the enclosure is literally as large as I can make it without it winding up in the walkway of my room and she gets a few hours to just run around the entire room (yes it's hog-proofed and she's supervised)

(I already have to shampoo the carpet soon, my room is honestly perfect for doing the whole cageless thing if anyone has any tips or tips on litterboxes that'd also be great)

When she does, she always runs to one specific place and just... obsessively paces.

I catch her and pick her up and she's calm and happy and fine, but I put her back down and she just starts pacing again.

I know they often run laps, but she's like.... running back and forth over and over across an area about two feet long.

Any advice? She's happy and alert and she seems comfortable and not stressed or overwhelmed, her cage is large enough and I've made sure the areas she has access to are fairly cluttered with her toys and blankets and stuff.

I have no idea what could be causing her to pace, but should I be worried?

2021.11.30 16:04 Depressed_Weeaboo i dont understand the war between Trotskyism and Stalinism

im a new comrade so i may dont understand the full context of such a conflict between the two views of marxism, i read about trotskyism and stalinism but is always partial, they always point at each other with so much hate that i can understand the full context because i feel that all opnions i read are bias.
in the end aren't we all commies? why such hate towards each other and what are the biggest differences that make all this conflict between the two ideologies.
i would love links and books that i can read about it.

2021.11.30 16:04 Federal-Guava-2326 What were Hitler/Stalin/Mao like as people?

Who were they personally? Were they sociopaths, narcissists, paranoid, sadistic? Did they have symptoms of PTSD? Did they enjoy inflicting violence for its own sake, or was it a means to an end? What did the people who knew them think of them? What would their schoolmates say about them?

2021.11.30 16:04 BurstMurst Question about Orthodox Church service

Hello I am a Roman Catholic so I am not too familiar with Orthodox Christianity and I am curious about how some of it works. How are the church services structured? Is it different at every church? Is there a certain way every church has to perform a church service? Do you celebrate the holy communion? If so, is it at every church service?

2021.11.30 16:04 Weinertabogon Trying to find out the name of a restaurant I passed on Friday night in the west village area.

Around 12am I was walking from Chelsea down to about Christopher street and I passed a restaurant that I can’t remember the name of. I looked fairly nice big round tables, wide front windows first floor. A bar on the right when you walk in. I would say late 30s crowd pretty well dressed. It looked pretty lively. That’s all I got, if anyone has any ideas of what that is?
