2021.10.17 06:03 Jacobiteagrarian Lovecraft Inspired Story: The Slide

The Slide

The storm had come on faster than I’d expected. I hid in a hollow oak tree as the rain pelted the woods around me.
The trail was washed out and I was pinned, with South Sewickley Creek to my back and Dead Warrior Bluff before me. The floodplain where I stood was all that was left of the township park that had been sold to a developer last year.
The township supervisors had forgotten why the land had been turned into a park. No farmer would touch that ground after the last stand made by Seneca warriors against the colonial militia on the cliff’s edge. The farmers believed in their last act before being gunned down, the Seneca had cursed that ground and any man who would dare to build a home on it. It had remained woods since and was the last refuge for most wildlife in this corner of suburbia. Then a local developer, Gerald Aloe, got himself elected to the board of supervisors. He convinced a couple of the other supervisors that letting him develop part of the park would be of a benefit to the township by expanding the tax base. Up the houses went and out went the woods and wildlife.
At the time I didn’t have the mind to recollect on this local political chicanery as my immediate thoughts were on the rising creek water. My ignorance of the true impact that ignoble and incompetent men can have on the natural world still haunts me to this day.
However, it was then that the fog first set in. It was subtle at first, but quickly obscured the woods around me until I could only see the closest trees and the rough outline of the cliff face.
Then something caught my eye, a shape moving through the fog. It resembled a larger canine, but with something not quite right about it. It seemed to move with the fog rather than passing through it as it neared the cliff face. Other shapes, larger and smaller than the first, soon appeared. Their outlines were indeterminate, seeming to even merge and split off from one another. They milled about with one another for a moment before moving with the fog towards the cliff face.
Soil had already been falling off the cliff face due to the rain, but as the fog reached it, it began to fall in larger chunks. More and more piled at the base of the cliff. Finally, a critical mass was reached and the cliff gave way.
The next thing I remember was being pulled from the cavity in the tree by first responders. The size of the tree had allowed it to survive the landslide with only minimal damage. The same however could not be said of the houses above.
The whole of the development had been destroyed in the slide, leaving myself as the only survivor of the incident. In all 37 people lost their lives in that landslide, including, in a twist of fate Aloe, who had just moved into the last house in the development the day prior.
One curious thing I noticed about the site when I was first pulled from the tree were the vast number of animal tracks in the area. These tracks were eventually destroyed as emergency crews dug through the rubble in their mostly profitless attempt to find survivors, leading to their absence from the official government report on the tragedy.
Some of the tracks were of animals common to the region like deer, raccoon, and turkey. Others were more obscure, like those of a large feline and several hulking sets, which I can only describe as resembling those of an elephant.
The most disturbing however were a set of canine tracks. This was not because of their uncommonness to the area, but because of their physical nature. As I followed their errant path, deviating off towards the edge of the site, the impressions in fresh mud became lighter and lighter until the tracks disappeared entirely with no clear sign of where the animal that had made them went, as if it disappeared into the ether.

Did anyone think this episode started off kinda weird or just didn't make any sense? I feel like it was meant to be fan service & that there's something missing. It just felt like there was kinda jump over something, idk how to explain it but it just seemed like something wasn't fitting in or something was just missing.....
